3 Ways You can Create a Lifestyle and NOT a Life Sentence

Oftentimes people come to me wanting to lose some weight and they have no idea where to start. They know they need to be in a calorie deficit but the day to day of how that works can be challenging.

The biggest thing I say to my clients is let’s focus on creating a lifestyle and not a life sentence. What does that mean? I’m not going to tell you to go on a diet but I am going to ask you to put healthy foods in your body.

The first step is making a plan together. We’re going to talk about how you can make lifestyle modifications that best fit your day to day. A lot of people expect me to tell them the secret sauce of what works best for me or my other clients. However the truth is, to be able to make sustainable changes we have to look at how you can make lasting changes in your life.

After we talk about how you can start making lifestyle modifications we’ll then tackle the grocery store. The grocery store can be an overwhelming place for a lot of people. Especially when you’re making different buying decisions and nutritional changes. For example, if you’re going gluten free, it’s helpful to know what products are best to buy and where you can find those products in the store.

Now it’s time to set some goals. Typically people will say, “I want to lose weight because I want to look a certain way” or “I want my pants to fit differently.” It’s all associated with a “look”. However, I’ve found that when my clients set a goal with an associated feeling they tend to be more successful. I’ll work with you to connect your feelings to your goal. For example, when I lose weight, I will feel happy, strong, and healthy. That emotion you feel at the end is part of your “why” and a key thing to turn to when your motivation is lacking.

Lastly, I want you to remember that a part of everybody’s health journey includes coming back and saying, “this isn’t working” or “I need to reassess”. Sometimes your goals change or your lifestyle modifications need a tune up! That’s okay! We’ll help you refocus and get back on track.

Remember, you’re creating a lifestyle and not a life sentence. Creating a healthier lifestyle should be fun and something that you can do for the rest of your life.
